Bringing ROUVY closer to reality has always been our main objective. Discover in this article what is drafting about and how it will affect your rides on ROUVY!

One of the biggest benefits of riding in a group rather than riding alone is experiencing the benefit of drafting by effectively riding in a paceline. Drafting occurs when a cyclist moves into an area of low pressure behind another cyclist, reducing the wind resistance and the amount of energy required to pedal. Over the course of a ride, everyone in the group can experience drafting benefits by rotating the lead rider to the back of the pack, or riding in a paceline. Doing this correctly can reduce the amount of effort you’re putting in by 30%, meaning you can go farther, faster and get more PRs!

Racing becomes not only about your power but also about your tactical skills. It also makes racing more fun because of the tactical elements. Scan the profile of the route, save some power and attack in the key moments!

How much energy does drafting save on a bicycle?

Interestingly, there seems to be little consensus among researchers that have investigated this topic. Studies have shown drag reductions of between 27% and 50% for riders that are drafting, with the exact reduction depending on a number of variables — the size and on-the-bike position of the rider in front, likewise with the rider drafting, the distance from the wheel in front, the direction and strength of the wind.

How does DRAFTING work in ROUVY AR?

In the new DRAFTING feature on ROUVY, the experience you would get when you find a rider with a steady pace and keep yourself behind him is replicated. Of course, the benefits of the drafting effect also depends on the route profile and performance of the rider in front of you.

Based on the drafting position, your power and heart rate values will be increasing or decreasing. When you are close to the rider in front of you, you can notice the decrease in power & HR values. On the other hand, once you are not in a bunch, your values are higher because you are riding alone.

On the picture below you can see the graphic indicator where you are the ”moving” icon on the left - the green bar shows the distance between 15-0m. For the best effect, you need to be as close as possible to the bicycle in front of you.

The drafting feature is in beta testing right now. It is still being developed in order to bring the feeling as close to reality as possible. Feedback from the ROUVY community has always shown us how to continue developing in the right direction, and how to improve the rides for an experience as real as riding outside. Therefore, everyone can try drafting in a few online races, where we hope the new feature will change the game. We will be very grateful if you could participate using the drafting feature and then fill out the form to share your opinions about what we can improve! Key Summary:

What is drafting exactly?

  • A group of cyclists will ride in a close line one behind the other, taking turns riding up front (pulling) before peeling off and latching onto the back. When you draft like this, by tucking in close behind another rider, you expend less energy, with up to 27 percent less wind resistance

What are the benefits?

  • less energy needed for the ride
  • more fun when engaging with other riders
  • bringing the ROUVY experience closer to the reality

How does it work?

  • in the ROUVY app - the drafting effect works within 0 - 15 m of the cyclist in front of you
  • the graphic indicator shows the distance you need to achieve for the best effect

I agree with some above - For God's sake get ANT+ working properly in the new AR platform! I'm still riding the "old" platform with the crappy avatars because I cannot use ANT+ on the new AR. A genuine disappointment and something that feels like it should not be too much of a problem to do, given every platform and his dog uses ANT+ reliably.

This is a game-changer. In fact, it could change things so much that many users might prefer the current non-drafting setup. It would be great to let users toggle a setting to go between "Time-trial" and "Drafting" mode or something like that, in case they find the change not to their liking.

I said the same, if there is no option to turn it off i'll be off to zwift or something else. Lets face it, unless your a sprinter there's nothing worse than some leech drafting you and blasting past you at the line.

I am in my 1st week of the 2 week free trial. So far I have found the experience to be very positive. I have been using the Tacx training app for about a year. I will need to make big decision as to wether I change to Rouvy. Thank you so far for the usage.

Drafting? First I would like them to get the easy stuff right. Like getting the program to send the resistance value to my Elite trainer and to get Ant+ working.

Assume it will be optional and have an off button?
