DIGITAL SWISS 5: THE GREATEST ON-SITE DIGITAL EVENT OF THE SEASON STARTS THIS FRIDAY

MARTIN SKUHRAVÝ - 16.11.2021

When the Digital Swiss 5 debuted last year, an incredible 700 million fans from around the world watched the event and cheered for the athletes. The unique Swiss event earned a terrific amount of attention, thanks to Tour de Suisse’s first ever virtual format and the large number of participating PRO teams and riders.

Part of the concept stays unchanged for the 2021 edition. The major difference is that, at this year's edition, the pro riders will not just meet online but will come together to the Zurich stadium, Saalsporthalle, to compete over 3 days on the real augmented courses of 5 beautiful and historical cities of Switzerland.

The new hybrid format allows amateur riders and athletes of all types to come to the stadium to ride along with the pros at the same time. They will experience an atmosphere similar to that of the track championships where the spectators can watch the full action from start to end, without leaving the seat.

The race concept is simple. There will be 5 cities, from across Switzerland, and each will be represented by a team of maximum 6 members. Two of these members will be current PRO riders and the remaining four guest cyclists will be professionals from the world of cycling such as triathlon, mountain biking, cyclo-cross or track cycling.

Sign up and measure your strength against the PROs!

Each of these mixed-gender teams will be represented by 2 athletes on a live event in Zurich’s Saalsporthalle, enjoying a lively atmosphere with an enthusiastic crowd animated by a DJ. The remaining (up to 4) athletes will be joining the teams from their homes. There will be a general classification for both teams and individuals.

Similar to the remote official event teams, you, just like everyone else around the world, have a great chance to join an open online race series and measure your strength on the very same AR courses like the famous PRO racers.

If you prefer a less competitive format, you are welcome to join and ride at your own pace, just to explore the beautiful Swiss lakes and unique historic downtowns that do not look like anything else, anywhere in the world!

Pro riders

The list of the PROs is not yet complete, but you can look forward to seeing these names on the starting line:

  • Hermann Pernsteiner, Team Bahrain Victorious
Ranked 10th at the 2020 Giro d’Italia, there is no doubt that Hermann is a climbing specialist. He also took part in the 2019 La Vuelta and finished 15th.

  • Jason Osborne, Deceuninck–Quick-Step
A competent rower and a cyclist who surprised the cycling world in the 2020 UCI World eSports Championship when he took gold.

5 races, 5 Swiss towns to explore

Each of the five events consists of a 3 lap race on non-climbing courses that lead through the beautiful towns of Lucerne, Lugano, Lausanne, Basel and Zurich and take about an hour each. These tend to be flat or slightly hilly routes; there are no mountain stages. Drafting is always ‘ON’ to make races fun; it’s not only about raw power! Everyone will be able to demonstrate their skills and tactics.
